The filmmaker behind the 2015 blockbuster backpedals on his comments about Rey, saying the character's parents may 'already be in her world.'

AceShowbiz - Rey's parents may be the characters we're already familiar with after all. J.J. Abrams sent fans into a frenzy on Friday night, April 15 when he said during Tribeca Film Festival that Rey's parents were not in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". Shortly after, he clarified his comments as he spoke to Entertainment Weekly.

"What I meant was that she doesn't discover them in 'Episode VII'. Not that they may not already be in her world," the filmmaker told the site. It means, those fan theories about Rey being the daughter of Luke Skywalker or Leia are still valid.

During a discussion at TFF, Abrams reiterated that he knew who Rey's parents are. However, he remained tight-lipped about it. "So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too," he told the crowd.

Fans may find out about Rey's parents when she returns for "Star Wars Episode VIII". The upcoming installment, which will be directed by Rian Johnson, is set for release in the U.S. on December 15, 2017.
