Roger Moore Denies He Said 'Something Racist' About Idris Elba Playing James Bond

The actor who played the super spy in the '70s and '80s says that his comment which was initially published in French for French magazine Paris Match was taken out of context.

AceShowbiz - Roger Moore was heavily criticized after he appeared to make a racist comment when responding to speculations that Idris Elba could be the next James Bond. The 87-year-old actor, who played the British super spy in the '70s and '80s, allegedly said during an interview with French magazine Paris Match that the 007 agent should be played by an "English-English" actor.

"A few years ago, I said that Cuba Gooding Jr. would make an excellent Bond, but it was a joke!" Moore was quoted as saying. "Although James may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman, and an Irishman, I think he should be 'English-English'... it's an interesting idea, but unrealistic." It's should be noted that Moore's comment was published by Paris Match in French.

Following online backlash, Moore took to Twitter to deny he made any racist comment about Elba. "An interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue. #Lost in translation," he wrote.

In a Twitter exchange with a fan, he explained, "When a journalist asks if 'bond should be English' and you agree, then quotes you saying it about Idris Elba it's out of context."

Elba has been a strong contender to play the next James Bond since a bunch of Sony emails leaked late last year. The 42-year-old star has said that he'd love to portray the iconic character if he's offered the role.
