Named after one of the late singer's mixtapes, 'Montage of Heck' has Cobain's daughter Frances Bean as executive producer.

AceShowbiz - Kurt Cobain will be subject of a new documentary set for release next year on HBO. "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" is the first "fully authorized" film about the late Nirvana frontman, in which his daughter Frances Bean Cobain is an executive producer.

It took director Brett Morgen eight years to complete the film. "I started work on this project eight years ago," he said in a press release. "Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth. However, once I stepped into Kurt's archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media."

"Montage of Heck will focus on Cobain as an artist who worked in many medium including rock 'n' roll. The drama surrounding his death in April 1994 at the age of 27 will not be part of the documentary, which runs slightly over two hours.

"One thing that will really surprise people in the film is that while we all know about him as a musician and visual artist, we'll be showing his Super-8 movies, his spoken word poetry and autobiography, his sculptures, his photography and his sound design pieces," Morgen told Variety. "He worked in just about every medium. These pieces show a world view that no one has seen, and all this material has been sitting in storage boxes for all these years. I'm thrilled we're going to be able to share it with the world."

The film is named after one of Cobain's mixtapes, which was made online earlier this month. Like its title, the mixtape featured "some records, some TV, and random sounds he recorded". Cobain's former partner Tracy Marander said he "may have been stoned" while making the tape.
