'Downton Abbey' Renewed for Season 6

A new installment of the British period drama series will go into production in 2015.

AceShowbiz - "Downton Abbey" gets a sixth season. The renewal was officially announced on Thursday, November 6 via the show's Twitter page. "We are delighted to announce a sixth season of Downton Abbey," so read a tagline written on a photo of the cast.

"We have had an amazing reaction to the story lines, acting and production values of 'Downton Abbey' this year and the whole team is thrilled to be moving ahead with a new season of the show," said executive producer and Carnival's managing editor Gareth Neame in a statement. "This will provide audiences with a fresh opportunity to see what will befall our much loved characters."

PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger added, "At its heart, television is about storytelling, and 'Downton Abbey' is certainly storytelling at its finest. 'Downton Abbey' and the Crawley family have kept us on the edge of our seats as they navigate through some of the biggest moments of the 20th century. Along with our member stations, PBS can't wait to share the next season of 'Downton' drama with our audiences."

The sixth season will be written by Julian Fellowes, who also created the series, and will go into production in 2015.

The fifth season of the period drama will complete its run in the U.K. this Sunday, and will debut in the U.S. on PBS on January 4.
