Kelli Garner, who starred on the ABC period drama series, will headline the cabler's upcoming miniseries 'Marilyn'.

AceShowbiz - Kelli Garner is Marilyn Monroe on Lifetime's "Marilyn". The cable channel has cast the 30-year-old blonde beauty in the title role of its upcoming four-hour miniseries about the late blonde bombshell.

The upcoming project is based on Randy Taraborrelli's book "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe". On the show, Monroe is described as a woman who will walk red carpets in shimmering gowns while fighting a battle against demons, which she inherited from her mentally ill mother Gladys whom she loves, hates and wants desperately to save. Veteran actress Susan Sarandon has been tapped to play Marilyn's mother.

According to the official description of the miniseries, "Marilyn is both the personification of sex, whose first marriage ironically collapses because of her frigidity, and a fragile artist who seeks the approval and protection of men."

"But after tumultuous marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, she realizes she has the strength to stand on her own. She becomes the face and voice of an era, yet wants most of all to be someone's mother and someone's little girl. She's the Marilyn you haven't seen before, the artist who, by masking the truth with an image, gives her greatest performance."

"24" scribe Stephen Kronish provides the script, while Laurie Collyer is on board as director. Jonathan Koch and Steven Michaels of Asylum Entertainment will serve as executive producers alongside Kronish and Keri Selig.

Garner appeared as Faith Domergue in "The Aviator" and starred as Catherine "Kate" Cameron on ABC's short-lived period drama "Pan Am". She also had roles in 2006's "Dreamland", 2010's "Going the Distance" and supernatural thriller "Horns" which will open in selected theaters in the U.S. on October 31.
