MTV Video Music Awards 2014: Common Leads Moment of Silence for Ferguson

The rapper, who took the stage to present a trophy for Best Hip Hop video, said, 'I want us all to take a moment of silence for Mike Brown and for peace in this country and in the world.'

"The people in Ferguson and St. Louis and communities across the country have used their voices to call for justice and change, to let everyone know that each and every one of our lives matters."

Previously, a rep for the network confirmed that a 15-second clip about Ferguson would be aired during the show. The video features a quoted from author James Baldwin which reads, "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced."

"It's a call to action to our audience that we have to confront our own bias head-on before we can truly create change. The ongoing message for our audience is not to be color blind, but to be color brave," MTV president Stephen Friedman said of the quote in an email to The Hollywood Reporter.
