Weinstein Co. predicted the 'Sin City' sequel to earn at least $15 million but it takes in less than half of it.

AceShowbiz - "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" officially bombs at the weekend box office. The "Sin City" sequel is way off its No. 1 and $15 million debut expectations, taking in approximately $6.5 million and falling to the eighth place which is a position lower than last week's box office failure "The Expendables 3".
The film had mixed reviews and B- cinemascore. Weak campaign did not help too although the actioner boasts a list of strong cast such as Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin and Bruce Willis. However, box office analysts believe the failure is to be blamed on the sequel's delay. "Because of this inexplicable delay, a project that easily could have opened to $50 million in 2007" did not even make it to the top 5, Box Office Prophets analyst David Mumpower said.
The first "Sin City" opened to $29.1 million back in 2005 and went on to make $158.8 million worldwide. "This is a complete miss," said Erik Lomis, the Weinstein Co.'s distribution chief. "Obviously, we're very, very disappointed in the numbers. We definitely did not see it coming in like this."
The easy competition allows the superhero movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" to reclaim the box office crown. In its fourth weekend, the Disney/Marvel Studios film earns an estimated $17.6 million for a total gross of $251.9 million. It becomes the third biggest film of the year and highest earner of the summer. Internationally, it nearly passes the $500 million mark with Japan and China yet to be added to the number.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" rakes in approximately $16.8 million in its third weekend and claims the second spot, followed by newcomer "If I Stay". The tearjerker starring Chloe Moretz brings in an estimated $16.4 million. Head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. Dan Fellman said the studio was pleased with the performance considering its $11 million production budget.
Comedy "Let's Be Cops" adds an estimated $11 million in its second weekend, enough to place it in the fourth position. Rounding up the top five is another newcomer "When the Game Stands Tall". The faith-based high school football film opens with approximately $9 million.
"It opened within our sweet spot," said Sony's worldwide distribution president Rory Bruer. "It was done at a very modest budget. Our campaign was very grassroots and to open to $9 million and have the uptick that we had on Saturday night with an A- Cinema Score and very, very strong exits - people really like the film. I think it will be in theaters for many weeks to come. It's going to have a very solid multiple."
