'How to Train Your Dragon 2' Is Highest-Grossing Animation of 2014

Thanks to China and most of the international markets, the sequel has earned more than half a billion dollars worldwide.

AceShowbiz - "How to Train Your Dragon 2" becomes the highest-grossing animated movie so far this year after opening to a strong $5.6 million on Thursday, August 14 in China. The DreamWorks Animation movie passes the $500 million mark at the global box office, the studio said on Friday.

The sequel has earned $170.6 million domestically and $331.2 million internationally since it opened in June this summer. It surpassed other animated releases this year including Warner Bros.' "The Lego Movie" ($468 million), Fox's "Rio 2" ($496 million) and "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" ($268.7 million). Ticket sales for the sequel also surpassed the 2010 movie which raked in $495 million in revenues.

"We have been incredibly proud of 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' from the moment we saw it and we're thrilled that it has been embraced around the world with such enthusiasm," said Chief Marketing Officer Dawn Taubin. "This film is not only an artistic and technical achievement for DreamWorks, but its strength at the global box office proves that audiences are embracing it as one of the most entertaining films of the year."

"This is a tremendous result for such a deserving, critically acclaimed film," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic theatrical distribution at 20th Century Fox, which distributes DreamWorks movies. "We look forward to riding 'Dragon 2' to greater box office heights."

"Dragon 2" is still to open in Italy this weekend.
