Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams Join Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandal Film
Movie

'Spotlight' refers to the team of Boston Globe reporters who exposed decades-long sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests.

AceShowbiz - "Spotlight" would be a big production involving big names such as Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Aaron Eckhart and Liev Schreiber. The theme is also controversial, exposing the real-life Boston conspiracy to cover up clergy child abuse.

The title refers to the team of Boston Globe reporters who went on a year of investigation on Catholic Church's decades-long cover-up of its pedophile priests in Massachusetts. They interviewed victims and reviewed thousands of pages of documents and discovered years of cover-ups by Church leadership. Boston Globe went on winning a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for exposing the scandal.

Ruffalo and McAdams reportedly would be two reporters but McAdams' Sacha Pfeiffer would only be supporting. Ruffalo takes the main role of Michael Rezendes, Schreiber plays the then-Globe editor Marty Baron while Keaton is the Spotlight Team editor Walter Robinson. Tucci will portray attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represented the families of abuse victims.

The film is a collaboration between Open Road, Participant Media, eOne and Anonymous Content. Open Road will handle the domestic sale while eOne takes care of the international. The script is written by Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy, the latter of which would also direct. Filming will start this fall in Boston and Toronto.
