'Kingsman: The Secret Service' Challenges 'Fifty Shades of Grey' on Valentine's 2015

The spy actioner has been moved back from its fall 2014 release date in Fox's bid to benefit from the female-driven day.

AceShowbiz - "Fifty Shades of Grey" has gotten itself "Kingsman: The Secret Service" as a competition. The latter was initially set to be released this fall on October 24 but would now hit theaters on Valentine's 2015, Fox announced on Wednesday, August 6.

Starring Colin Firth, "Kingsman" is an action spy tale about super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. It is based upon the acclaimed comic book "The Secret Service" and directed by Matthew Vaughn.

The original date was a crowded one with Universal's "Ouija", Weinstein's "St. Vincent", Paramount's "Paranormal Activity 5" and A24's "Laggies" all flocking for the weekend. Moving to the new date is not exactly going to make it easy for "Kingsman" because "Fifty Shades" has been generating buzz since its production was announced. The first trailer of the erotic movie sparked trending topic on Twitter and sparked controversy for its content when it was released late last month.

Fox itself relied on past success of releasing an actioner on female-driven Valentine's Day. "A Good Day to Die Hard" opened solidly on the date last year, debuting at number one over that weekend with more than $28 million in gross. Fox also announced at the same time the shift of "Poltergeist" from Valentine's Day to July 24, 2015.
