The adaptation of a religious Japanese novel is reportedly poised to enter the 2015 Oscar season.

AceShowbiz - Paramount Pictures is looking forward to entering the 2015 Oscar season through Martin Scorsese's "Silence". The studio is in talks to acquire the distribution rights to the film which is Scorsese's passion project for more than a decade.
"Silence" is based on Shusako Endo's novel that Scorsese reportedly read two decades ago. Archbishop Paul Moore sent it to him after a screening of the director's "The Last Temptation of Christ", Variety reported.
It follows two Portuguese missionaries who travel to Japan in search of their mentor and to spread Christianity as they face violence and persecution against the religion. The movie has Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver and Ken Watanabe in the cast list. Garfield and Driver are the two young priests, Neeson is their mentor while Watanabe is their language interpreter in Japan.
The script was provided by "Gangs of New York" scribe Jay Cocks. The tentative plan is to release the film in November 2015, just in time for the award-season movies submission. Shooting will take place in Taiwan.
