Wheelan, who just joined the NBC variety show last season, takes to Twitter to announce that he's not returning for next installment.

AceShowbiz - Brooks Wheelan is fired from "Saturday Night Live" after only one season. He broke the news himself on Twitter, writing on Monday, July 14, "Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke... FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!"

Sources have confirmed that Wheelan is indeed not returning for the upcoming 40th season of the sketch series and added that casting changes are normal. "SNL" and NBC have not released any statement regarding this report as casting decisions are expected to be announced in August.

Wheelan joined "SNL" as a feature player last season along with Beck Bennett, Noel Wells, Kyle Mooney, Mike O'Brien, John Milhiser and Sasheer Zamata. The 27-year-old stand-up comedian, however, had less screen time compared to the other new additions.

Nasim Pedrad, who had been on the show for five seasons, hinted in June that she wouldn't be returning either. "I haven't heard any official word so far, but I love this show so much," she said of FOX's new show "Mulaney" on which she has a role. "I have an apartment in L.A. and, as far as I know, I'm in L.A. now."

Later the same month, "SNL" creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels said there would be casting changes this coming season. "There will be changes this year," he told Deadline.

Michaels went on addressing the challenges they faced due to casting shake-up, "We lost four leading men at the end of last season, Fred [Armisen] and Bill [Hader] and Andy [Samberg] and Jason [Sudeikis], all of whom were very seasoned, very strong cast. We lost Kristen [Wiig] the year before."

"All have been here a long time, and you get used to how good people are," he continued. "Losing the fifth leading man in Seth [Meyers] (in early February) was a hard thing, in the middle of a season, because there's only one other time in the 39 years that we ever changed Update in the middle of a season, and that was Norm Macdonald to Colin Quinn."
