Video: Robin Thicke Opens Up About Splitting From Paula Patton, Admits It's His 'Faults'
Robin Thicke opened up about splitting from his wife, Paula Patton, in an interview with New York's Hot 97 radio station on July 1. He became a guest in the radio show to promote his new album "Paula", which was released on the same day.
The "When I Get You Alone" singer revealed that he had not seen his estranged wife for about four months. He said, "I try to keep most of that private, but, I haven't seen her for four months. We're cool. She's the best girl in the world, a great mother and still a good friend."
"But because we just weren't ever together anymore and I still had so much I wanted to apologize for and things I wanted to take responsibility for, so that's pretty much what the album's about," he continued, "But I also want to wish her well and let her know that she's a great person and she deserves to have a good life."
"The album is exactly what happens when you lose the love of your life and you're trying to figure it out in your head," he added, "How am I going to move on and get through it all? We just weren't happy together anymore and I still had so much I wanted to apologize for, and things I wanted to take responsibility for, so that's pretty much what the album's about."
When the hosts commented on his longtime relationship with Paula, which had begun when he and Paula was still at young age, Robin responded, "If you've been together that long, you kinda became adults together instead of being adults and then meeting. But maybe a year or two off, we'll become our own people without each other and then it will be meant to be."
The 37-year-old singer songwriter claimed that music was his "therapy." He said, "When I make these songs and I listen back to them, they make me feel good about myself because at least I'm admitting my faults and trying to become a better man, better person, better father."
Robin admitted that Paula hadn't heard his album yet, "She's only heard a few songs. I don't think she wants to hear it right now. I can't speak for her, but I think space is an important part of any healing process."
The "Brand New Jones" singer further shared, "It's not that simple. After 20 years... it didn't work for 20 years because it wasn't right - it was right. Sometimes people grow apart. You didn't build love in a day and you don't lose it in a day."
He additionally said that cheating was not the reason they separated. "[Cheating] is not why we're apart," he claimed, "We're apart because we just couldn't be together anymore for a while. There's a hundred different reasons, there isn't just one. There's a long list... I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy, and little too full of myself."
