Oliver Stone will tackle a political drama in his next project. The Oscar-winning director is on board a movie about controversial NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, which is based on a book titled "The Snowden Files" by The Guardian journalist Luke Harding.

Stone will also serve as a producer along with his longtime partner Moritz Borman, while Harding and other Guardian journalists will become consultants. "This is one of the greatest stories of our time," Stone said. "A real challenge. I'm glad to have the Guardian working with us."

Guardian's editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger said, "The story of Edward Snowden is truly extraordinary, and the unprecedented revelations he brought to light have forever transformed our understanding of, and relationship with, government and technology. We're delighted to be working with Oliver Stone and Moritz Borman on the film."

Stone who last directed "" in 2012 once called Snowden a "hero" for exposing NSA's global surveillance program. He also slammed President Barack Obama as a "disgrace" for prioritizing to hunt Snowden over transforming the "George Bush-style eavesdropping techniques."

"The Snowden Files" is not the only movie about the ex-National Security Agency contractor. Sony is also developing a similar project with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who are known for producing James Bond films like "" and "", serving as producers. It's based on a book called ": Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State" by former Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald.
