Artist of the Week: 50 Cent

June 2, 2014, 6:29 am GMT

The rapper can do whatever he wants with his music and release it whenever he likes after he left Interscope and Eminem's Shady/Aftermath earlier this year.

50 Cent has proven that he's still one of the biggest rappers in the game despite not being signed to major labels. After leaving Universal Music Group's Interscope Records and Eminem's imprint Shady/Aftermath earlier this year, he showed that being independent allowed him to do many different things with his music and drop his new projects anytime he wanted.

The arrival of a track titled "The Funeral" became one of the biggest moments in 50's career. Released in conjunction with his interview with Forbes back in February, the song is the first he released as an independent artist. "Me just being able to release music that I feel is right for right now, 'This is dope, put this out,' is really cool. It changes the experience for me, man," he said in a recent interview with Huffington Post.

50 is now gearing up to drop his new album, "Animal Ambition". Set to arrive on June 3, five years since its predecessor 2009's "Before I Self Destruct", the full-length will focus on prosperity and untamed ambition to win.

"I just been really excited about the concept," he told Complex earlier this year. "When you listen the record, you'll see it because I told you it, it's about ambition. If I didn't say that, you wouldn't listen to the record and say 'What's that song called?' "

"Cause when Biggie was saying, 'Damn, n***as wanna stick me for my paper,' that's writing prosperity, but the effects of it from others. Jealousy is created from you moving forward. I wrote it from a lot of different angles in order to create an album with all the facets I was comfortable with so it could all have one thing," he added.

The record will feature guest appearances from Yo Gotti, Jadakiss and Trey Songz among others. It has been preceded by tracks like "Smoke", "Pilot" and "Irregular Heartbeat" which 50 released along with their respective music video in the past few weeks.

After the LP comes out, 50 will move to another project. He'll work on the long-delayed "Street King Immortal", which he initially planned to release in 2012. Of the record, 50 has said, " 'Street King Immortal' is a little more personal. There's a piece that I wrote that is a metaphor for nine different painful moments that I experienced in my life. Some of the worst experiences... The project is meant to bring you to where my head has been at."
