Joan Lorring, Oscar-Nominated Actress, Dies at Age 88

The actress who starred in 'The Corn is Green', 'The Stranger', and 'The Verdict' among other movies died last Friday.

Joan Lorring, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "The Corn is Green" where she starred opposite , died on Friday, 30 May at age 88. She died at suburb of Sleepy Hollow, New York City.

Lorring was born Mary Magdalene Ellis in Hong Kong in 1926 and moved to California, United States in 1939 to avoid the Japanese invasion. In California, she started to work in a radio, before appearing on stage and screen.

Her first movie was "Song of Russia" in 1944 and her first role was Sonia. Later, her career continued to rise as she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at Academy Awards in 1946 for her role as Bessie Watty in 1945's "The Corn is Green". In the same year, she also played in another movie "Three Strangers" and "The Verdict". She also won Broadway's Donaldson Award in 1950 for her role in "Come Back, Little Sheba".

Lorring began appearing on the television in 1950 where she played on soap operas and sitcoms. She actively played on television series until 1980.

Lorring was married to a New York endocrinologist, Martin Sonenberg, who died in 2011. She is survived by two daughters.

Lorring's daughter, Santha Sonenberg, stated that "right up until her death, she continued to have fans who wrote and sought her autograph and she had a following."
