OWN to Honor Maya Angelou With Special Tribute

The Oprah Winfrey-founded network will dedicate five hours of programming to the late poet and author this Sunday.

OWN has set a special tribute in the wake of Maya Angelou's passing. The cable channel will dedicate five hours of programming to the late poet and author this Sunday, June 1 with encore presentations of shows where Angelou was prominently featured.

The special tribute begins at 5 P.M. ET/PT with "", followed by "Super Soul Sunday" and the premiere airing of "Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball". "Oprah's Master Class" with Angelou will air at 9 P.M., followed by a new episode featuring at 10 P.M. ET/PT.

"I've been blessed to have Maya Angelou as my mentor, mother/sister, and friend since my 20's," OWN's CEO and COO says in a statement remembering Angelou. "She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life. The world knows her as a poet but at the heart of her, she was a teacher. 'When you learn, teach. When you get, give' is one of my best lessons from her."

The former daytime talk show queen adds, "...what stands out to me most about Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it's how she lived her life. She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace. I loved her and I know she loved me. I will profoundly miss her. She will always be the rainbow in my clouds."

Angelou passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday, May 28 at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Stars , and as well as President Barack Obama are among public figures who have paid tribute to the beloved poet.
