'The Mummy' Remake Loses Director Andy Muschetti

The 'Mama' helmer withdraws himself from the long-gestating reboot due to creative differences.

Already being in development hell for a long time, "" remake is facing a roadblock once again. "" director Andy Muschetti was initially tapped to replace Len Wiseman to serve at the helm, but he has cut ties with the project due to creative differences.

When Wiseman was still attached to the remake, it was envisioned to be a darker, scarier take on the "Mummy" mythology. According to The Wrap, Muschetti wanted to take that direction but Universal was keen to make it more family-friendly action adventure.

The original "Mummy" starred Boris Karloff in 1932. A remake with was made in 1999, and a sequel "The Mummy Returns" followed in 2001. The last film, "", was released in 2008.

The franchise has spawned an animated series, a roller coaster in Universal Studios Theme Parks, novels, and a 2002 spin-off "The Scorpion King" led by Dwayne "" Johnson.
