'The Voice' Recap: Shakira and Adam Levine Pick Their Top 3
Preparing for the Live Rounds, the coaches narrow down their team to 3. After Blake Shelton, it's Shakira and Adam Levine's turn to pick their top 3 singers on "The Voice" Playoffs Monday, April 14.
Kristen Merlin of Team Shakira took on Carrie Underwood's "Two Black Cadillacs". Shakira and Adam gave her standing ovation at the end of her performance. Blake and Usher said Kristen emerged as a top contender at this point.
Deja Hall chose to sing "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks. The judges complimented her by pointing out how she had morphed from a little girl into a young lady, but added that she still had so much potential.
Tess Boyer went with "Human" by Christina Perri. Adam regretted that he's the only one who had not had her on his team as Tess was previously on Team Blake and Team Usher. Usher dubbed Tess "super-human."
Patrick Thomson opted to sing "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne which suited his voice well. Former coach Adam said the performance was excellent and Blake mocked the Maroon 5 vocalist for letting Patrick go. "You are such a dumb person," Adam hit back at the country music crooner.
Dani Moz delivered an emotional rendition of Lady GaGa's "Edge of Glory", playing a piano. Adam suggested that Shakira keep Dani in her team. Blake and Usher also praised her, but the latter added that there were rough parts during the performance.
After all five remaining singers in her team performed, Shakira had to make up her mind. She chose to send Tess, Kristen and Dani to the Live Rounds and eliminate Deja and Patrick.
Next, there were performances from Team Adam. Delvin Choice covered "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. Blake said Delvin had transformed into an amazing singer, and Adam boasted that he had part in it. Shakira praised Delvin's "delicious" voice.
Jake Barker did "She Will Be Loved" by his coach's band. He was under pitch and appeared to be trying too hard to make the song his own, but Blake, Usher and Shakira liked Jake's falsetto. Blake also compared Jake to Justin Timberlake.
Kat Perkins chose Journey's "Open Arms". Usher said the performance was "flawless." Shakira liked it that Kat made it seem "effortless" yet emotional. Adam realized that a Journey song is difficult and challenging, and said it was Kat's best performance yet.
Morgan Wallen went country by singing "Stay" by Florida Georgia Line. Usher admitted he wasn't the best coach for Morgan and realized that Morgan should have been singing country music all along.
Christina Grimmie dedicated an emotional and powerful performance of Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up" to her mom, a three-time breast cancer survivor. Blake couldn't find a flaw so he criticized her outfit instead. "I should say something critical ... your shirt's too shiny," he said. Her coach Adam raved, "The big victory for you today is getting the mastery of what you do under control, and man, it's just ... it's only the beginning."
In the end, the rocker chose to bring Christina, Delvin, and Kat to the Live Shows.
