'Dancing with the Stars' Recap: Shocking Elimination and Perfect Score on Disney Night
Cody Simpson had to hang his dancing shoes on Monday, April 14. The Australian singer was shockingly eliminated in the latest episode of "Dancing with the Stars" season 18. The audience booed to show their disagreement.
Looking disappointed, the pop star said after learning his fate, "This has been an amazing experience. Obviously it's tough, but it is what it is." His pro dancing partner Witney Carson added, "I'm sad. I feel like people didn't really get a chance to see Cody yet."
Earlier the night, Cody and eight other celebrity contestants danced Disney-themed numbers. Season 9 champion Donny Osmond returned as a guest judge, saying that he'd be judging on performance, not technique.
Drew Carey and Charlie White were first to be announced safe that night. The former then took the stage with Sharna Burgess to dance a quikstep to "Friend Like Me" from "Aladdin". The judges said it was a fun performance, but the technique was bad. The game show host earned 28 out of 40 points.
Charlie and his pro partner Sharna Burgess followed next, dancing a jazz to "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from "Mary Poppins". He earned rave reviews, with Bruno Tonioli calling it "one of the best performances we have ever seen." The Olympic ice dancer got 37 points.
For the next performance, Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy danced a quickstep to "Be Our Guest" from "Beauty and the Beast". Channeling her inner Belle in a yellow gown, she impressed the judges. "You were gorgeous. The line was fantastic. Beautiful hold," Carrie Ann Inaba said. Len Goodman agreed, but added, "You lost body contact a bit." The judges gave her 39 points.
Amy Purdy and Derek Hough danced a waltz to "So This is Love" from "Cinderella". Donny revealed he cried watching Amy dance, saying that the paralympic snowboarder was "more than inspiring." Carrie Ann said, "The bad new is I always call lifts, but I cannot take a point off you because of your unique situation." Amy earned 37 points.
Cody Simpson and Witney Carson danced a samba to "I Just Can't Wait to be King" from "Lion King". Bruno, Carrie Ann and Len praised him for his energetic performance. Donny said "the dancing was phenomenal," but felt like Cody didn't like the dance. They gave Cody 34 points.
Up next was NeNe Leakes with pro partner Tony Dovolani. Tony said the switch-up last week "put a road bump" in their relationship as they were seen bickering during rehearsals. They put it aside for their performance of foxtrot set to "Cruella de Vil" from "101 Dalmatians". Carrie Ann gushed, "You can rock the villain," and commended Tony for "the best choreography ever." The reality TV star earned 36 points.
James Maslow set the bar even higher with his contemporary number to "Let It Go" from "Frozen (2013)". Len said the dance "would melt the coldest heart, even mine." Donny added that James' athleticism and the performance amazed him. The Big Time Rush singer earned a perfect score of 40 for his flawless dance.
Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced a samba to "I Want to Be Like You" from "Jungle Book". They were so in sync that Carrie Ann said they danced "as part of one body." Donny said it was "thoroughly entertaining." Meryl earned 36 points.
Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas danced a "Little Mermaid"-themed samba to "Under the Sea". As she was lamenting the possibility of her being eliminated this week after landing in the bottom of scoreboard, Donny cheered her up, "Don't give up, what I saw was so promising." The "Full House" alumna got 35 points.
