The Comedy Central stars will produce the new installment of the slapstick comedy along with original producer Paul Maslansky.

AceShowbiz - "Police Academy" reboot gets update. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, best known for their comedy show "Key & Peele" on Comedy Central, are on board to produce the remake project for New Line Cinema.

The Hollywood Reporter learns that Paul Maslansky, who produced the first seven films, is back to reprise his role for the reboot. Meanwhile, Scott Zabielski who was initially attached to serve behind the lens is now no longer involved.

The original series followed a group of quirky police recruits who repeatedly are called to help save the city. For the new pic, Jeremy Garelick is tapped to polish the screenplay drafted by David Diamond and David Weissman.

"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

The first film led by Steve Guttenberg arrived in 1984. The last installment to hit theaters, "Mission to Moscow", was released in 1994. The comedy also inspired an animated TV series and a live-action one. It's unclear if Key and Peele will be among the cast for the new one.
