MGM to Re-Introduce Pink Panther in Live-Action/Animated Movie

April 1, 2014 (7:10 am) GMT
'The Simpsons' helmer David Silverman is picked to helm the international jewel heist caper movie.

A new "Pink Panther" movie is in the works at MGM. Unlike previous movies that centered on inspector Jacques Clouseau, the upcoming project which will be a live-action/animation hybrid feature will focus on the titular feline. "" director David Silverman will sit behind the lens.

The Pink Panther was introduced in the first original movie as the name of diamond targeted by a master thief. The animal itself only appeared briefly on the opening credits. Due to its popularity, it spawned animated shorts, one of which won an Oscar, a TV series, and comic books among others.

In most of the vintage films, Blake Andrews served as a director and Peter Sellers played the buffoonish Clouseau until his passing in 1980. The franchise was revived with Roberto Benigni in 1993 and then in two movies released in 2006 and 2009.

For this new pic, Michael Price, who writes and co-executive produces "The Simpsons", is in talks to write the script. Walter Mirisch, who executive produced the original movies, will serve as a producer for the upcoming film along with Andrews' widow, actress .

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new story will be an international jewel heist caper movie. The Panther will not speak and Clouseau will not appear at all although he still exists in the movie's mythology. It will also feature the classic score by Henry Mancini.

"I am delighted that the legacy of Blake's iconic Pink Panther franchise will continue to grow in its new hybrid form. It is exciting that the quintessential 'next step' for our beloved Panther will be enjoyed by a fourth generation of audiences. I feel that Blake is encouraging us on," Julie said.
