Nick Cannon's Whiteface Stunt to Promote New Album Sparks Racial Controversy

March 26, 2014, 3:25 am GMT

The 'America's Got Talent' host responds to the criticism by posting a photo of Robert Downey Jr. donning blackface and saying that 'there is a big difference between humor and hatred.'

Nick Cannon has been slammed as racist after he shared an Instagram photo of him introducing his white alter ego Connor Smallnut. The picture, which features the TV star donning red wig, beanie hat and a plaid shirt, was originally meant to promote the TV star's new album, "White People Party Music".

"It's official... I'm White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft 'Bro I got drafted!!' " he captioned the controversial photo.

Some people have taken to social media to voice their outrage over Cannon's transformation. "This is so f**king offensive. What if Britney Spears made herself black and put a pic up that says 'it's official.. IM BLACK,' " one Twitter user wrote. Another user added, "Don't get me wrong I think it's hilarious but it's just a double standard."

However, the husband of Mariah Carey doesn't seem to take the criticisms too seriously. He recently addressed the controversy on Twitter, saying, "It's funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!"

He later posted a picture of Robert Downey Jr. wearing blackface in Ben Stiller's 2008 comedy, "Tropic Thunder". "Shout out to @RobertDowneyJr This is one of my favorite characters of all time! Hilarious!!! There is a big difference between Humor and Hatred," he said.

Cannon's "White People Party Music" is set to hit the stores on April 1. The "America's Got Talent" host recently explained the controversial title of his record, telling Us Weekly, "You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody."

He added, "They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album 'Purple People Party Music' and you'd still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?"
