ABC Pilots: Katie Holmes Stars in High Society Drama, Felicity Huffman Joins 'American Crime'
Katie Holmes and Felicity Huffman may return to the small screen with ABC's shows. Both actresses are cast in two different pilots for the network, with the former landing a role in an untitled Richard LaGravenese soapy drama and the latter joining John Ridley's "American Crime".
Described as a high society drama, the LaGravenese project is set in New York City and revolves around the love and rivalry between two equally matched, powerful socialites who play out their obsessive attraction to and seduction of each other through their manipulation of others.
Holmes, whose last series regular role was as Joey Potter on 2000s' "Dawson's Creek", will play Ann, a well-bred woman who is described as Audrey Hepburn-esque. She and her husband run a philanthropic foundation that helps bring clean water to African villages. Childless, she thinks she'd like to raise a family, but she can't get her philanthropic husband to settle down in one spot for very long.
The rival couple, socialite Margot and Philip, make a bet to reveal the lie of true love by destroying Ann's perfect marriage. Rufus Sewell has been cast as Philip, Ann's biggest enemy.
Huffman, meanwhile, takes the female lead role opposite Timothy Hutton in "American Crime". The hour-long drama focuses on the lives of the players in a trial for a racially charged murder. The "Desperate Housewives" alumna will play Barb Skokie, Russ' (Hutton) stoic ex-wife and mother of the killed young man, Matt.
According to Deadline, Barb raised her two sons alone in public housing while her husband was off gambling. She still resents living as the only single white woman in a racially charged environment and being treated accordingly by the other occupants. Determined to hold someone accountable for Matt's murder, Barb plans to stay close to the investigation and get answers.
Holmes landed a role as Jackie Kennedy on miniseries "The Kennedys" and guest starred as Naomi a.k.a. the Slutty Pumpkin on "How I Met Your Mother". Her recent big screen credits include "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Jack and Jill".
As for Huffman, she has not appeared on any TV shows since "Desperate Housewives" wrapped up in 2012, but she takes part in such films as "Rudderless" and "Big Game" which are slated to arrive in U.S. theaters this year.
