Steven Spielberg Eying to Direct 'West Side Story' Remake

Rumor has it, Fox has unlocked the story as soon as the 'Lincoln' director expressed his interest to remake it.

"" could get a remake. According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg has expressed his interest to helm a new take on the classic star-crossed love story. No writer has been tapped, but Fox which owns the movie rights reportedly has made the story available for the director to tackle if he really wants it.

Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, the first "West Side Story" film was released in 1961 to a big success. Adapted from a Broadway musical inspired by William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" tale, the urban retelling won 10 Oscars including Best Picture at the 1962 Academy Awards.

Spielberg hasn't directed any film since 2012's "" which won two out of 12 Oscars nods. He previously bowed out of 's "" and put on hold his planned adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's sci-fi novel "" due to alleged script issues.

Regardless, the filmmaker remains busy as he is involved as an executive producer for two upcoming tentpole movies, "" due June 27 this year and "" slated for June 12, 2015.
