AceShowbiz - "The Lego Movie" stands strong at the peak of North American box office. The 3D animated movie holds the throne for three consecutive weeks after debuting atop the chart in the week ending on February 9.
The Warner Bros. film, which features famous superheroes in alternative LEGO universe, rakes in an estimated $31.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $183.2 million. Despite declining 37|percent| compared to last week's gross, the movie easily wins over newcomers "3 Days to Kill" and "Pompeii".
"It's been really tough for any of the newcomers to displace 'Lego'," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "They had such a great release date that put them in this perfect position to dominate the marketplace for several weeks."
Dergarabedian also commented on the new arrivals, " 'Pompeii' got savaged by critics. '3 Days to Kill' wasn't loved by critics either, so you had two films that didn't have a shot at taking 'Lego' out. But these movies did about what we would expect."
Starring Kevin Costner as a dying Secret Service Agent trying to reconnect with his estranged family, action thriller "3 Days to Kill" has to be content as a runner-up this week with approximately $12.3 million opening. The movie, which cost a relatively modest $28 million to produce, earned B CinemaScore.
"3 Days to Kill" performs better than "Pompeii" which sits at No. 3. Also earning B CinemaScore, the action adventure flick opens to approximately $10 million against its reported budget of $100 million. The gladiator drama starring "Game of Thrones" actor Kit Harington, however, is well accepted overseas, raking in $22.8 million internationally.
Dropping one place from No. 3, "RoboCop" is now at No. 4 on its second weekend with additional $9.4 million. Pushed from its fourth place last week, "The Monuments Men" rounds up the top five with an estimated $8.1 million. Last week's runner-up "About Last Night" plunges to No. 6 with approximately $7.4 million, while "Frozen (2013)" stays steady at No. 8 with an estimated $4.4 million (dropping only 30|percent|).
