The Kevin Hart and Ice Cube starrer posts the biggest MLK weekend debut of all time and beats 'The Nut Job', 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' and 'Devil's Due' to top the U.S. movie chart.

AceShowbiz - "Ride Along" wins the race to No. 1 at box office over the U.S. holiday weekend. Universal's cop comedy movie starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube beats fellow new releases as Open Road's animation "The Nut Job", Paramount's spy pic "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit", and Fox's horror story "Devil's Due".

The funny film about a rookie cop trying to impress his prospective brother-in-law opens atop the domestic movie chart with approximately $41.2 million over the normal Friday-to-Sunday weekend and is estimated to reach $47.7 million or more over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend that includes Monday.

Costing a reported $25 million to produce, the film directed by Tim Story posts the biggest opening ever for the long MLK weekend, surpassing previous record holder "Cloverfield". The Matt Reeves-helmed sci-fi movie nabbed $40.1 million for three-day gross and $46.1 million for four-day haul back in 2008.

"Ride Along" gets a rare A grade from CinemaScore. Although only 10 of 47 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were positive, 94 percent of the audience on the site gave it thumbs-up. The ticket buyers, meanwhile, consisted of African-Americans (50|percent|), under the age of 25 (46|percent|), and female (57|percent|).

"The Nut Job" voiced by Will Arnett and Katherine Heigl finishes third with an estimated $20.6 million. The family-friendly movie places behind last week's No 1, Universal's "Lone Survivor", which falls one spot with additional $23.2 million ($38.6|percent| decrease) pushing its domestic total to $74 million.

"Jack Ryan", which follows Tom Clancy's hero during his young years with Chris Pine assuming the lead role previously portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, falls short of its projected haul of $19 million. The spy thriller follows "Nut Job" at the fourth place with an estimated $17.2 million.

"Devil's Due" is the last new movie making it to the top 10. The scary film starring Zach Gilford and Allison Miller opens at the seventh place with $8.5 million. It trails behind Oscar nominees "Frozen (2013)" and "American Hustle" which add an estimated $12 million and $10.6 million respectively.
