'Lone Survivor' Wins at Box Office, 'Legend of Hercules' Takes a Tumble

The Mark Wahlberg starrer posts $38.5 million debut which is the biggest bow for any post 9/11 war movies, while the Kellan Lutz pic opens to just $8.6 million against a $70M budget.

It marks the biggest bow for any post-9/11 war films by far and the second best January opening of all time after "" debuted with $40.1 million in 2008. Boosted with a rare "A+" point from CinemaScore, it's watched by 57 percent male and 57 percent 30-year-old or older.

The movie becomes a big comeback for director Peter Berg after his previous pic "" opened to only $25 million against a reported budget of over $209M. It also marks one of Wahlberg's best-ever opening, after "" which bowed with $54.4M in 2012.

The film is not just celebrating box office win but it's also raising money for veterans. Producers join forces to create Lone Survivor Fund to benefit Got Your Six, Navy SEAL Foundation, and Lone Survivor Foundation founded by Marcus Luttrell, the real-life soldier who is played by Wahlberg in the film.

During a promo appearance on "", Wahlberg and Kitsch competed in a challenge to win $10,000 for the cause. People are also able to make donations when purchasing tickets for the film through Fandago. A total of $100,000 was successfully raised through the weekend.

The second biggest opening for a new wide release this weekend is "". Costing $70 million to produce, the starrer which explores the origin story of the titular demigod bows at the fourth position with only $8.6 million.

With "Lone Survivor" reign at the box office, "Frozen" is forced to slip to the second place with an estimated $15.1 million (23%decrease). The Disney animated grossed $317.7 million domestically and sailed past $700 million mark globally against a $150 million budget.

's "" settles at No. 3 with additional $9 million in its third weekend. " rounds up the top 5 with approximately $8.6 million, driving its total gross past the $100 million mark.
