The seven-time Formula One champion slips into coma and requires a brain surgery following a ski incident in the French Alps.

AceShowbiz - F1 icon Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after he hit his head during a ski accident in the French Alps on Sunday, December 29. Schumacher was airlifted to a hospital in Moutiers a few minutes after the accident. Officials at the University Hospital Center of Grenoble, where he was transferred to, said in a statement that the seven-time Formula One champion was in coma when he arrived and required a brain surgery.
A spokesperson for Schumacher, Sabine Kehm, confirmed the accident in a statement. "He was taken to hospital and is receiving professional medical care. We ask for understanding that we cannot give continuous information about his health. He was wearing a helmet and was not alone. For his fall, no other person was involved," Kehm explained.
The director of the Meribel resort where Schumacher was skiing, Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, told CNN that the accident took place in the mountains of Meribel resort between Georges Bauduis Piste and La Biche Piste. "We have to wait for a police report. There is an open investigation going on. We insist on the fact that Michael Schumacher was skiing off-piste and his fall is not linked to an avalanche," he said. Schumacher was "shocked, a little shaken but conscious" when medical team responded to the scene.
Felipe Massa, Schumacher's former teammate on Ferrari, took to Instagram to pray for his speedy recovery. "I am praying for you my brother!! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you Michael," he wrote. Adrian Sutil from Sauber team added, "I hope Michael Schumacher will get well soon! All my best to him and his family #gutebesserung."
