'It's Kind of a Funny Story' Author Ned Vizzini Commits Suicide

Vizzini, whose book 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' was adapted into a movie starring Zach Galifianakis, commits suicide in New York.

Popular young adult author Ned Vizzini has died. The New York city Medical examiner confirmed that the author, who is popular for his book "It's Kind of a Funny Story", committed suicide on Thursday, December 19. He was 32.

"I am stunned and deeply saddened by the death of Ned Vizzini. He was the perfect collaborator, with a brilliant imagination and a sharp sense of humor. I've spent nearly every day over the past two years working closely with him, and I can't fathom a world without him. He will be greatly missed and my prayers are with his wife Sabra, his son Felix, his parents and brother," said Chris Colombus, Vizzini's co-author on "House of Secrets" and "House of Secrets: Battle of the Beasts", as quoted by Los Angeles Times.

The author of "Witches of East End" series, Melissa de la Cruz, remembered Vizzini as "one of the nicest and sweetest people, he understood pain, and he was a kind person because of it. He expressed joy and gratitude for the small things. He was earnest."

Vizzini published "It's Kind of a Funny Story" in 2006. It is a semi-autobiography which tells the story of a teenager who tries to commit suicide and then is sent to a mental institution. In 2010, the novel was adapted into a movie with the same name, starring and .

In addition to "It's Kind of a Funny Story", Vizzini's other credits include 2000's "Teen Angst? Naah", 2004's "Be More Chill" and 2012's "The Other Normals". He also wrote TV scripts such as J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron's show "" which is due in March. He additionally worked for "" and "."
