There is also a report saying that the 'Man of Steel' sequel is being rewritten by 'Argo' scribe Chris Terrio.

AceShowbiz - Warner Bros. allegedly has their eyes set on Joaquin Phoenix as a candidate to play the villain in "Man of Steel 2". According to Variety, the 39-year-old actor is in early negotiations to portray the superhero's nemesis Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman vs. Batman movie.

The casting report comes on heels of Phoenix's latest movie "Her" which sparked Oscar buzz. He has delivered many critically-acclaimed performances in films like "Gladiator", "Walk the Line" and "The Master", but he reportedly turned down offers to take part in blockbuster superhero movies in the past.

The "Man of Steel" sequel is directed by Zack Snyder who helmed the first film. Henry Cavill is back as Superman, Amy Adams returns as Lois Lane, Ben Affleck is added as Batman, and Gal Gadot is brought in to portray Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, among the rumored cast are Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey.

The Hollywood Reporter learns that Chris Terrio has just been tapped to rewrite the script originally penned by David S. Goyer. Terrio has history of working with Affleck. He previously scripted "Argo" which was led, directed, and produced by Affleck. The film won three Oscars including Best Picture at the 85th annual Academy Awards.

"Man of Steel 2" is due July 17, 2015 in the United States. Production has already begun this fall, but the main cast is not expected to film their scenes until early next year.
