The 'Britain's Got Talent' sensation hopes the diagnosis, which is a form of autism, will help people understand her better.

AceShowbiz - After a long search for the truth, Susan Boyle found out that she has Asperger's syndrome and it came as sort of a relief for her. The 52-year-old singer told British paper The Observer that she went to see a specialist because she thought she has a far more serious condition than what the doctors told her when she was a child.

Boyle had difficulties learning as a child and was told that it was the result of oxygen deprivation upon birth. "I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label," she said. "Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself."

Asperger's syndrome is a form of autism and people diagnosed with it generally have an above-average IQ. Boyle was constantly bullied through school and continued to struggle after she became famous in 2009 due to her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" on "Britain's Got Talent". She was treated for nervous exhaustion after her shot to fandom.

"I would say I have relationship difficulties, communicative difficulties, which lead to a lot of frustration. If people were a bit more patient, that would help," she told the newspaper. She added, "I am not strong on my own. When I have the support of people around me I am fine."

Now that she knows what she's having, Boyle hoped that people will understand her better. "Asperger's doesn't define me," she said. "It's a condition that I have to live with and work through, but I feel more relaxed about myself. People will have a much greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do."
