AceShowbiz - Some people apparently disapprove of Carrie Underwood's casting as Maria in NBC's holiday special "The Sound of Music Live!". To Entertainment Weekly, she reveals that she gets hate tweets, some of which comparing her to Julie Andrews who played the character in the original film in 1995.
"I get hate tweets and stuff like, 'You're not Julie Andrews!' " she opens up. The winner of "American Idol" season 4 then tells the haters, "I know I'm not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was ... I know my place."
Contrary to those who criticize the casting choice in the remake of the 1959 Broadway musical production, Andrews has expressed her support to the project. "Fifty years later, it's time somebody had another crack at it," the British actress told Zap2it. "I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me."
She added, "I think it's great that it's being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting for Carrie. I know they're not doing the movie, though. They're doing the Broadway show -- that's what they have the rights to -- and I don't know whether it will resonate similarly. In the movie, we cut some things from the stage version and added some songs."
The three-hour holiday production is based on the Broadway musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Taking the male lead role of Capt. Georg von Trapp is "True Blood" actor Stephen Moyer. Audra McDonald is cast as Mother Abbess, Laura Benanti stars as von Trapp family friend Max Detweiler, and Christian Borle takes the role of Elsa Schrader, the Captain's onetime fiancee.
The holiday special will run December 5 and air live on NBC starting at 8 P.M. ET. "Smash" producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as executive producers for the show.
