'The Day of the Doctor' drew 2.4 million viewers during its first telecast on Saturday night, becoming the highest rated telecast ever for the cable channel.

AceShowbiz - The high anticipation for the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special resulted in the big audience for the episode. "The Day of the Doctor" lured in 2.4 million viewers for the first U.S. telecast on Saturday, November 23 at 2:50 P.M. ET, marking best-ever rating for BBC America.

When the primetime encore was factored in, the 75-minute special delivered a total of 3.6 million viewers. It's more than ten times of the audience for the channel's most popular show of the previous week ("Star Trek: Next Generation" which posted 294,000 viewers).

"The Day of the Doctor" also set a record on Tumblr with the highest level of activity of any televised event ever, surpassing the Super Bowl and MTV's Video Music Awards. Being aired simultaneously in 94 countries across 6 continents, it earned the Guinness World Record for the largest ever simulcast of a TV drama.

"The fan response on-air, in social media and in theaters across the country has been nothing short of incredible. The 50th Anniversary of this extraordinary program has cemented its iconic status for millions of American viewers and we can't wait for the Christmas Special," says Perry Simon, General Manager for BBC America.

"Doctor Who" will next air a Christmas special which will become the last episode featuring Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi will be introduced as the new Doctor in the said episode set to air in December.
