The sequel to 2011's 'Thor' hammers its way to the top spot and pushes last week's chart topper 'Ender's Game' to the fifth position.

AceShowbiz - "Thor: The Dark World" opens big at domestic box office. Seeing Chris Hemsworth returning as the hammer-wielding god, Natalie Portman as his mortal love interest and Tom Hiddleston as his bitter brother, it makes a grand entrance atop the chart with a thunderous *$85.7 million.
It is the fourth biggest debut weekend of the year, coming behind "Iron Man 3" ($174M), "Man of Steel" ($116.6M) and "Fast and Furious 6" ($97.4 million). It also becomes the ninth biggest November opening ever, trailing closely behind "Skyfall" which bowed with $88.36M last year.
Taking place a year after the events of "The Avengers", the "Thor" sequel adds another $94 million overseas, with Russia, U.K. and China debuting with $24.1M, $22.6M and $19.6M respectively. It brings its foreign gross to $240.9 million and pushes its worldwide cume to a mighty $327 million.
The domestic audience consists of 38 percent female and 62 percent male with 61 percent over the age of 25. "The combination of storytelling and a very successful, inspired marketing campaign made it appeal to the broadest possible audience," says Disney's distribution chief Dave Hollis.
Directed by Alan Taylor, the movie which sees a reluctant alliance between Thor and his trickster brother Loki earns an A- from CinemaScore. The first "Thor" film got a B+ last year. It debuted to $65.7 million in North America and grossed $449.3 million globally.
There is no other new release making it to the top 10 this week. Last week's No. 1 "Ender's Game" starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford slips to the fifth place with additional $10.2 million. The $110-budgeted pic could only rake in a domestic total of $44 million after two weekends.

*UPDATE (Nov. 12, 2013): After the final figures came out on Monday, November 11, it's revealed that "Thor: The Dark World" raked in $85.7 million in its debut weekend. It still held the first place though the actual number is less than the estimated one ($86.1 million).
