'American Idol' Results Show Cut Down to Half an Hour

The other half of its original one hour airing time on Thursdays will be filled by comedy 'Surviving Jack'.

AceShowbiz - Beginning on its next season that kicks off of on January 15 and 16, 2014, the results show of long-running TV singing competition show "American Idol" will run for only 30 minutes, cut down by half from the hour-long programming it has enjoyed since it first started airing back in 2002. The changes for the long-running program, now entering its 13th season, were announced by Fox on Friday, October 25, adding that the remaining 30 minutes of the one-hour Thursday time slot will be filled by new comedy TV series "Surviving Jack".

The move seems to be a wise one on the part of the network, since it saw the program's results show go down to as low as 2.6 in the ratings. It's not even as radical as the changes made by another popular TV competition show, ABC's "Dancing with the Stars", which this season totally took down their eliminations show and instead absorbed in into the performance show, taking a cue from a 2012 programming move by "So You Think You Can Dance".

Not only the results show of "Idol" seems to be suffering in the ratings game in recent years, but even the performance show has become less popular with viewers compared to previous seasons when it was still the hottest show on TV. Its somewhat-decreasing appeal is believed to be affected by the rise of other singing competitions, particularly NBC's "The Voice".

But next year will be another chance for "Idol" to reclaim its lost glory, with the return of pop diva Jennifer Lopez and the debut of musician Harry Connick Jr. as judges. Country crooner Keith Urban stays on in the panel for a second straight year while Randy Jackson, despite stepping down as a judge, will still be appearing on the show as an in-house mentor.
