Tori Spelling Slams 'Plastic' Katie Holmes, Dean McDermott Denies Broke Report
Tori Spelling is bashing fellow celebrity Katie Holmes in her new book "Spelling It Like It Is". The mother of four says Holmes was a sweetheart when they first met, but her impression towards the former wife of Tom Cruise changed a few years later after an awkward encounter.
"Dawson's Creek Katie was exactly what you'd expect," the 40-year-old actress recalls her first encounter with a young Holmes years ago. "She was wearing jeans and a tank top. Her hair was down. She was shy but engaging, and altogether pretty adorable."
And then they ran into each other at Eric Vetro's studio while Spelling was waiting to meet the vocal coach. She called Holmes "plastic," after the ex-"Dawson's Creek" star gave her the cold shoulder. The former additionally ripped the latter's singing skills.
"As I sat waiting outside his music room, I heard his prior appointment working with him in the other room. It was some actress singing horribly off-key," Spelling claims. "That made me feel better. I heard him say goodbye and then the actress walked out of the room. It was Katie Holmes."
Spelling says Holmes did say hi but it was a chilly greeting. "I didn't know whether we should hug or shake hands. But the signal from her was immediately clear: Don't even come close," she remembers. "I instantly got nervous. We clearly weren't going to catch up on the last 10 years."
According to Spelling, she made an effort to break the ice by pulling "the mommy card" and saying she had children around Suri's age. Apparently, Holmes didn't know about Spelling's kids, which "annoyed" the former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star.
"Come on. OK, I know you're busy. But you're in the public eye. Don't tell me you don't follow the tabloids. Don't tell me you don't know anything about other celebrities and their kids," Spelling writes. "Then we stood there."
"She was just plastic. In a perfectly polite way. ... My pits were drenched. I never sweat. It was that awkward. I thought, I know you're not a robot because you can't sing for sh**," Spelling goes on. But it could be just a bad timing, as she adds, "Not long after that encounter, the news would break that she and Tom had split up."
In an earlier snippet unearthed by PEOPLE, Spelling seemed to hint at the financial problems that she and husband Dean McDermott were facing. The "90210" actress said she hadn't bought a handbag for three years and they couldn't even afford a vasectomy, leading to a speculation that they were flat broke.
"We're in the entertainment business, and things change year to year," she said. "We don't have a series on the air right now, so we have to be more restrictive of what we can spend, just like anyone who doesn't currently have a steady job."
The rumor was quickly shot down by McDermott. He clarified the "vasectomy" comment to Access Hollywood, "I went to [a] particular doctor because he's the best at [vasectomy] reversals and he doesn't take insurance and the estimate was pretty high. We told the business manager and he's like, 'That's a lot, that's a lot.' So I didn't pursue it."
In a separate interview with Us Weekly, he additionally insisted "things are going well." "I have several exciting projects in the works. Our show Dean and Tori's Backyard Bash just re-aired to great ratings, I'll be the new host of Chopped Canada and I have my first cookbook coming out -- The Gourmet Dad, in the spring," he explained. "Tori's book just launched this week and things are good."
"Sometimes things are awesome, sometimes they're just not," he added. "But it's about how we tackle things as a couple, as a family. And we do a pretty good job of that. Right now we have so many cool things going on - we're in an uptick."
