Thriller Author Tom Clancy Dies at 66

The author of 'The Hunt for Red October' and 'Patriot Games' passes away in Baltimore at the age of 66, his publisher announces.

AceShowbiz - Author Tom Clancy, who is popular for his novels such as "The Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games", has passed away. The military novel author died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore at the age of 66. According to Baltimore Sun, Clancy suffered from a brief illness prior to his death. The sad news was confirmed by Clancy's publisher Putnam.

"It was an honor to know Tom Clancy and to work on his fantastic books," president and publisher of Putnam, Ivan Held, said in a statement. "He was ahead of the news curve and sometimes frighteningly prescient. To publish a Tom Clancy book was a thrill every time. He will be missed by everyone at Putnam and Berkley, and by his fans all over the world."

Penguin Group (USA)'s executive David Shanks also released a statement following the famed author's death. "I'm deeply saddened by Tom's passing. He was a consummate author, creating the modern-day thriller, and was one of the most visionary storytellers of our time. I will miss him dearly and he will be missed by tens of millions of readers worldwide," Shanks said.

Clancy wrote 26 books throughout his 28 years of career. Some of his novels have been adapted into movies or video games. "The Hunt for Red October" was adapted into movie in 1990 with Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin as the cast. Harrison Ford played Jack Ryan in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger". Ben Affleck also played the character in "The Sum of All Fears".

A new Jack Ryan book entitled "Command Authority", which was co-written with Mark Greaney, will be released on December 3. New movie "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" starring Chris Pine hits U.S. theaters on Christmas Day.

Clancy, who was born in Baltimore, was an insurance salesman before he published best-selling books. He was married to his wife Wanda in 1969, but they split in 1999. Clancy is survived by his second wife Alexandra Llewellyn and four children.
