Katy Perry's 'Roar' Music Video Criticized by PETA

September 16, 2013, 2:52 am GMT

The singer got slammed by the animal rights group for the use of animal actors in her new music video.

Katy Perry's new single "Roar" may have soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in recent weeks, but its music video has now come under fire from animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The jungle-themed clip features the 28-year-old pop in a stand-off with a tiger after coming across an alligator, elephants and monkeys.

"Animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods," PETA said through their spokesperson, speaking out against the video which made use of "very well-trained, very well-mannered animals." "They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar or frightening situations," so the animal welfare organization, heavily supported by many celebrities, expressed.

PETA also slammed Perry for apparently working with animal exhibitor The Serengeti Ranch to come up with the "Roar" visuals, which according to PETA has a questionable reputation and "has been inspected by the US Department of Agriculture 22 times since 2001." Prior to this critique, PETA heralded Perry for having a vegetarian lifestyle with former husband, funnyman Russell Brand.

Despite the criticism over her latest video, Perry keeps focused on the aggressive promotion for her forthcoming album "Prism". Aside from the listening parties for the media in both New York and Los Angeles, the supposed tracklist of the album has surfaced online via a photo of a fan holding a piece of paper with sixteen tracks written on it, which include "Roar" and the other tracks played during the listening party from where the photo was taken.
