Strong will join Seth Meyers on 'Weekend Update' anchor desk starting with the September 28 season premiere.

AceShowbiz - "Saturday Night Live" has set a person in line to take over "Weekend Update" anchor duty when Seth Meyers begins his "Late Night" hosting gig. Cecily Strong, who joined the variety series as a featured player last season, will join Meyers on the "Weekend Update" desk as a co-anchor starting September 28 when the 39th season kicks off.

"Cecily, from the first show, was right there," says executive producer Lorne Michaels when breaking the news to New York Times. "She exploded," he gushes about the 29-year-old whose one of regular characters is "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party" on "Update" segment.

Although it seems that Strong will earn the solo gig when Meyers leaves "SNL", Michaels hopes the current head writer stays on the show even after he moves to "Late Night". "Seth is a unique case," Michaels says, noting that the new "Late Night" doesn't tape on Friday which leaves Meyers' schedule open to work on "SNL" that day and Saturday.

The upcoming edition of "SNL" will also welcome a sixth new cast member. Brooks Wheelan is added to the list of new featured players along with Michael Patrick O'Brien, who has been a writer on the show for the past four seasons, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett.

"SNL" has tapped former cast member Tina Fey to host the season premiere this fall with Arcade Fire as musical guest.

Meyers, meanwhile, will begin hosting "Late Night" show on Monday, February 24, 2014.
