The FX drama series shows a 13-percent bump in adults 18-49 demo, topping all broadcast and cable programs in several key demos on Tuesday night.

AceShowbiz - Perhaps the shocking scene of "Sons of Anarchy" that was talked about last month got people curious to watch it. Almost six million viewers tuned in to the season 6 premiere of the drama series on Tuesday, September 10.

With the 5.87 million audience, the show didn't only hit a series high, but also became a No. 1 television show that night. According to FX, the 90-minute season opener topped all broadcast and cable programs in adults 18-49 demo (3.94 million), adults 18-34 (2.0 million), adults 25-54 (3.90 million), men 18-49 (2.12 million), men 18-34 (1.01 million), men 25-54, women 18-49 (1.83 million) and women 18-34 (973,000).

When premiere telecast and encore runs are combined, the said outing delivered 8.09 million total viewers and 5.30 million viewers in adults 18-49 demo. It will also likely become the #1-rated single telecast in FX history when Live+7 data becomes available in approximately three weeks.

The show's return sparked a controversy with [SPOILER ALERT!] a mass shooting scene in elementary school committed by an 11-year-old boy. "I've wanted to do that story for about three years," series creator Kurt Sutter defended his decision to use the scene.

"I know obviously that it would be somewhat controversial, but I feel like as much as I wouldn't do something because it was controversial, I'm also not going to do something because it is [controversial]. It's an organic story to our world; thematically, it's the right fit."

He pointed out the importance of the scene, which would be "the catalyst for the third act of this morality play we're doing." He explained, "It sets everything in motion for this season that will ultimately lead to the end that then will bring us into the final season and what I see as the ultimate comeuppance of everything in terms of the series."
