Val Kilmer on New Batman: 'Give Ben Affleck a Chance'

August 26, 2013, 4:51 am GMT

'The Avengers' director Joss Whedon also believes the 'Argo' actor 'just needs the material' to 'crush it.'

Despite fans' disapproval of his new status as Batman, Ben Affleck might now feel much better. Val Kilmer, who surely knows how it feels to don the Dark Knight costume thanks to the production of Joel Schumacher's 1995 "Batman Forever", tweets a message of support to his fellow actor, who will face off against Henry Cavill in the Superman-Batman movie.

"Give Ben a chance!" says Kilmer, giving a shout-out to all angry fans who think that Affleck is not the perfect replacement of Christian Bale. The "Top Gun" star is not the only one who supports Warner Bros.' decision. Director Joss Whedon, who is currently busy working on "Avengers: Age of Ultron", also believes Affleck is the right man for the gig.

"Affleck'll crush it," Whedon sounds certain in his Twitter post. The creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" then explains why he thinks so. "He's got the chops, he's got the chin -- just needs the material," he reasons. "Affleck & Cavill toe to toe -- I'm in."

Affleck was officially announced as the new Bruce Wayne depicter on Thursday, August 22. Not long after the revelation, many took to Twitter to voice their disappointment with the casting news. An online petition has also been launched to urge Warner Bros. to drop him, but it surely won't work at all.

"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill," Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production for the studio, said.
