The series creator says he would've spent '30 years of wondering what would have happened had I gone back' if he didn't accept the offer to return to the NBC cult comedy.

AceShowbiz - When Dan Harmon briefly parted ways with "Community" in 2012, it wasn't on the best term. However, the series creator showed no hesitant to accept the offer when he's asked to be back as showrunner for the upcoming fifth season. During the show's panel at the Television Critics Association press tour, he revealed why he agreed to return to the NBC sitcom.
"If I had not gone back after being invited back, the worst-case scenario is 30 years of wondering what would have happened had I gone back," he said, hinting that he might have regretted it someday if he had passed on the opportunity to return. "If I go back, worst-case scenario is one sh*ty season."
Asked about the show's chance of getting a sixth season, Harmon told reporters, "It depends on what fails." He also explained his take on the next season, saying that he would use the formula for seasons 1 and 2, when each episode was stellar in itself. "Get ready for grounded story work!" he teased.
Still at the July 24 event, Harmon talked about inspiration behind his new show on Adult Swim, "Rick and Morty". He said, "For me, the influences are more in British sci-fi stuff that I grew up reading - like 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' also there's a heavy dose of 'Doctor Who' in there."
The 13-episode season 5 of "Community" will premiere in midseason. In addition to Harmon, Chris McKenna is back as executive producer for the cult comedy series. Star Donald Glover, meanwhile, will reportedly have his screen time reduced as he wants to use his time to focus on his music career under the moniker of Childish Gambino.
