Comic-Con 2013: Farewell Panels for 'Breaking Bad', 'HIMYM' and Matt Smith of 'Doctor Who'
Several TV series bid farewell to fans at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, including "Breaking Bad" and "How I Met Your Mother" which hit the convention over the weekend. At the panel for the former, series creator told the crowd, "I'm going to miss you guys and coming to Comic-Con. I'm satisfied with the ending. I hope you will be too."
New footage was shared in form a clip from the midseason premiere episode. It sees Walter entering the White family's house which has been abandoned. The empty pool is now used as a skate park by some teenagers. Walter, looking messy, removes an outlet cover on the wall to grab a small tube of ricin. When he steps outside, a neighbor sees him and he casually says to the shocked neighbor, "Hello, Carol."
There was a hilarious moment at the panel when Bryan Cranston walked onstage wearing a mask of himself, removed it, placed it on his microphone and talked into the mask, making it appear that he made out with it. The actor said the mask allowed him to walk the Con floor unrecognized, saying, "I used a higher voice. It was fun getting to meet all of you, and you got to meet me."
As for "HIMYM", the Saturday, July 20 panel was the show's first and last participation at the annual event. Show co-creator Carter Bays took the opportunity to clarify CBS' exec Nina Tassler's statement that the last season would take place over the course of Barney and Robin's wedding weekend.
Assuring that the upcoming final chapter is not all about the wedding, Bays explained, "Everyone is heading off to this wedding, and we sort of have this new framework. We want to stress the word 'framework,' because we don't want people to think there [will be] four hours of flower arranging. We're always going to be flashing back and flashing forward. Decades will span over the course of this weekend."
Co-creator Craig Thomas additionally dished that they would tell another story in the "slap bet" storyline. "There is going to be an episode in the middle of the season that takes place during the course of one slap," he revealed. "We're going to get the tennis camera that the U.S. Open uses to get slow motion [footage] of Roger Federer's serve."
Of Cristin Milioti who has been introduced as the titular mother, star Josh Radnor said, "It was weird there was some kind of relief when she joined the show, just so people would stop shaking me on the street asking who the mother was." Neil Patrick Harris went on assuring that Radnor and Milioti, who have yet to appear on screen together, have great chemistry.
At "Doctor Who" panel, meanwhile, Matt Smith made his last appearance as part of the cast. The 11th Doctor, who will last been seen in the Christmas special, shared his hope about where he would like to film his final episode. "I would like to go on record and say I really want to shoot the Christmas special in America," he said. "Is this a maybe? Can I get a definitely maybe?"
The script for the Christmas special is not complete yet, so nothing is shared about the episode. Showrunner Steven Moffat remained mum when asked about who would be the 12th doctor, but fans got to see footage from the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special, which features David Tennant, the 10th, and Smith together. The crowd was sent into frenzy when both actors shared the stage in Hall H.
