Comic-Con 2013: 'Supernatural' Debuts First Look at Season 9, Spin-Off Is in the Works
"Supernatural" stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Mark A. Sheppard as well as executive producers Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer attended the show panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 21. Fans in Hall H were treated to a first look at the upcoming season 9, which was played after a season 8 sizzle reel.
The new footage shows Kevin freaking out in the Men of Letters bunker. He almost shoots Dean with an arrow when the older Winchester enters and Sam brings a bagged-and-cuffed Crowley. The brothers threaten to put Crowley in his "own personal hell" until he reveals every demon possessing a human.
During the Q&A session, Carver said the new chapter would find the brothers "walking into a world where all the normal constructs of Heaven and Hell aren't there anymore." Padalecki added on how this situation would strengthen the bond between Sam and Dean, "In this free-for-all world, where we have the King of Hell living in our dungeon and angels walking all over the place, we're really going to need each other."
Carver went on dishing, "For the first time in a long time, the brothers chose each other and their love for each other over the season-long quest. That has left them stronger than ever, but has also created a tremendous amount of fallout."
As for Castiel, the former angel will undergo "a remarkable shift" in his new state of being. Collins said, "Now he can pop in and basically fold laundry. There's a shift in the dynamic there in terms of how he can be utilized by the brothers." Castiel will also "experience what it's like to actually eat - and then what happens to the food after," and Collins added, "You're an adult and you're flushing the toilet for the first time. There's gotta be an epiphany."
Felicia Day surprised fans by showing up in the middle of the panel, before Singer announced that she would return as Charlie in the ninth season. In later interviews, Carvel revealed, "We're going to see her [Charlie] early on in a really fun episode that delves back into the earliest days of the Men of Letters. Literally, the first two Men of Letters turning the key into a bunker that's never been used before in 1935. The first case they're coming up against involves The Wizard of Oz in a way that we've never really seen that story approached before."
The new season will also bring back the deceased Bobby as actor Jim Beaver spilled the beans last week on Twitter. Carver teased about Bobby's return, "We're going to see him in a way that we don't expect, but a way that's also true to our show mythology and our lore."
Still at the pop culture convention, Singer broke the news that a spin-off of the horror drama series was being developed at The CW. The potential new series will be introduced as a backdoor pilot in episode 20 and will focus on a new character that will be featured in the episode. Details are still scarce about the spin-off, but it is said to have a more urban feel than "Supernatural".
"Supernatural" season 9 premieres on Tuesday, October 15 at 9/8c on The CW.
