AceShowbiz - Through videos and images of "Elysium" that have surfaced online, fans have already been made aware that Matt Damon is mostly featured in the movie getting armed with a high-tech mechanical suit. Now, Damon and director Neill Blomkamp show up in the behind-the-scenes featurette talking about the "hulk suit" as described by the actor himself.
Though Damon certainly is a perfect casting choice for Max De Costa character, it turns out that his name was not the first to pop in Blomkamp's mind. In a profile on the South African helmer written by Wired, it is revealed that before casting the Jason Bourne depicter in "Bourne" trilogy, Blomkamp had approached and offered the leading role to another actor.
The site writes, "Blomkamp subsequently approached a bigger-name white rapper, Eminem, who was interested." The reason why movieholics now eventually see Damon as the leading man instead of this "interested" Slim Shady, who starred in "8 Mile", is as follows: "but only if the shoot took place in his hometown of Detroit."
In the sci-fi film, there are two very different planets belonging to certain groups of people in the year 2159. The first planet is called Elysium, a man-made space station where poverty and illness don't exist.
On the contrary, Earth is nothing but a global garbage dump where almost all people suffer from chronic disease and seem to have no choice but to live with it until it's time for them to die. Max De Costa belongs to this place and will be the one who breaks into the idyllic place.
Also starring Jodie Foster, "Elysium" is set for an August 9 release in the U.S.
