Johnny Depp Close to Signing On for 'Alice in Wonderland 2'

The 'Lone Ranger' actor is expected to return to the sequel, which will be directed by 'The Muppets' helmer James Bobin.

AceShowbiz - Just yesterday Johnny Depp entered talks to star in "Mortdecai" for Lionsgate, he is now back to the negotiating table for another potential starring vehicle post-"The Lone Ranger". Deadline learns that Depp is in final negotiations with Disney to return to "Alice in Wonderland 2".

If all deals are sealed, Depp will team up with James Bobin, who directed "The Muppets" and is already secured for its upcoming sequel, "Muppets Most Wanted". According to the report, the gig is part of multi-year first deal with Disney to develop movies the 50-year-old actor can produce at the studio.

Depp starred as the Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland", which was directed by his frequent collaborator Tim Burton. Teaming up with Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway, he drove the 2010 pic to the top spot at the box office right in its first week.

For his portrayal of The Hatter, Depp earned a Golden Globe nomination and won at the 2011 Kids' Choice Awards for Favorite Movie Actor.

The actor's latest movie "The Lone Ranger" is playing at theaters. He is currently filming "Transcendence".
