CBS Responds to Controversy Over Racist and Homophobic Remarks on 'Big Brother'

The network admits some of the statements made by the HouseGuests are 'offensive,' but they 'do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program.'

AceShowbiz - Just a week into its 15th season, "Big Brother" has sparked a controversy over the HouseGuests' statements on live feeds which offended fans. In the unedited streaming, some of the contestants were captured making racist and homophobic comments.

GinaMarie referring to welfare as "n**ger insurance," Aaryn calling gay contestant Andy a "queer," and another girl saying that Candace's "blackness" was coming out were some of the offensive remarks. Those parts, however, were not included in the broadcast version of the show.

Learning this, former cast member Ragan Fox penned an open letter urging the network to reveal the true colors of the HouseGuests on the televised episodes. "Big Brother, I LOVE you, but, if you really want to provide a groundbreaking twist, SHOW CBS VIEWERS HOW SOME STRAIGHT, WHITE PEOPLE talk about gays, Asian Americans, and African Americans," he wrote.

CBS itself has responded to the backlash caused by the HouseGuests' comments. "Big Brother is a reality show about watching a group of people who have no privacy 24/7 - and seeing every moment of their lives. At times, the Houseguests reveal prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone. We certainly find the statements made by several of the Houseguests on the live Internet feed to be offensive," it says in a statement.

"Any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by a Houseguest appearing on Big Brother, either on any live feed from the House or during the broadcast, are those of the individual(s) speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program."

"Big Brother" didn't address the issue in the recently aired July 2 episode. The said outing revealed Elissa as the first MVP and she nominated David for eviction. McCrae won the Power of Veto and used it to replace Candice with Elissa in the chopping block, along with Jessie. However, McCrae and Nick have set a master plan to evict David anyway.

The first eviction will be revealed on July 3.
