The German filmmaker of 'The White House Down' also confirms Bill Pullman's return to the sequel to the 1996 movie as Thomas J. Whitmore.

AceShowbiz - Roland Emmerich has given more updates on "Independence Day" sequel, tentatively titled "ID Forever Part 1". In an interview with Huffington Post, the German helmer of disaster films such as "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012" reveals that there will be a special character appearing on the follow-up to the 1996 flick.
"Actually in the next 'Independence Day', there is a gay character," says Emmerich, who is known as an outspoken gay rights activist and openly gay himself. Refusing to give further details of the character, the 57-year-old director later confirms that Bill Pullman is indeed back to the second film as Thomas J. Whitmore.
While Pullman is confirmed to return to the sequel, Will Smith apparently won't be up for it. "Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," Emmerich said to NY Daily News.
The "White House Down" filmmaker revealed that he got "like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film and the other half people who are new" in the script that is currently being polished by James Vanderbilt.
Twentieth Century Fox has already set "Independence Day 2" to be released nationwide on July 3, 2015.
