Serena Williams Sparks Outrage With Her Comment on Steubenville Rape
Celebrity

'I'm not blaming the girl, but... She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky,' the Tennis champion says of the Ohio rape victim.

AceShowbiz - Serena Williams landed in hot water for saying that Steubenville rape victim "shouldn't have put herself in that position." The tennis champion made the explosive comment when doing an interview for an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone.

"Do you think it was fair, what they got?" she said when she and the interview watched news on TV and the Ohio rape trial appeared onscreen. The case involved two high school football players who raped a drunk 16-year-old while other students watched and texted details of the crime.

Shaking her head, Serena continued voicing her opinion, "They did something stupid, but I don't know. I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don't take drinks from other people."

"She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously, I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

During the occasion, Serena also seemed to take a shot at Maria Sharapova who's dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's rumored exes. "There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean seriously, give it a rest," she said in a phone conversation with her sister Venus Williams.

"She begins every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky' - it's so boring," she continued without trying to lower her voice. "She's still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it."

Serena's comment on the rape case drew more criticisms than the other topics she addressed during the interview. "Pro tip for @serenawilliams or others discussing rape: if 'I'm not blaming the girl, but...' exits your mouth, stop there. There is no 'but,' " one Twitter user wrote.

Another tweeted, "By your words, @serenawilliams, you aligned yourself with rapists today and crushed victims everywhere. I truly hope you right your wrong." There was also one who added, "We don't need women blaming the victim."

Serena hasn't responded to the controversy.
